The critical first day

We all know that the slaughter weight of a batch of chickens is positively correlated with the 7-day-old weight of this batch of chickens, and I personally believe that in addition to the newborn weight of the chicks, another most important factor in determining the 7-day-old weight is the management of the first day, which can also be said: the first day is crucial to the life of the chickens.


1. Management of temperature.

After the chickens enter the chicken house, the temperature should rise in time according to the performance of the chickens, because the first thing the chickens do after entering the cage is to drink water, after drinking water often some chickens show the phenomenon of piling up, timely adjustment of temperature, so that the chickens slowly adapt.

As long as the chickens pile up, it means that our temperature (or the chicken's body temperature, sometimes our humidity is not added, causing the body temperature up) or not enough, we must continue to increase the temperature (or humidification) until the chicks are more loosely snuggled (will not be as loose as the large chickens though lying on their backs), indicating that the temperature is appropriate.

If the first day the temperature does not reach, chickens are afraid of the cold do not eat, drink and do not move, will directly affect the chicken 24-hour satiety rate, which in turn affects the uniformity of the chicks and the weight of 7 days old.


2. Water line.

The water line is adjusted to the bottom of the water cup from the ground 1 finger to 1 and a half fingers, this height chicks drink water when the neck and water line angle at about 45 degrees, can meet the needs of chicks drinking water.

After the chicks start to drink, use a flashlight to check the water situation of each nipple one by one: as long as there are water drops in the water cup, it means that the nipple is normal, if the water cup is dry, it means that there is a problem with the nipple.

 Need to say one more thing is that caged chickens we have to pay extra attention to the water line, because the net and ground breeding, a nipple blocked, the chicken can go to another nipple to drink, a water line blocked, you can go to another water line to drink; but cage breeding as long as the cage nipple blocked, it will cause this cage chicken water shortage.

3. Management of feeding.

You can use a small material bucket to assist in the opening of food, or you can directly use the trough to open food. Use small buckets to open food, small buckets can be used for about 3 days to remove the transition to the trough, too long to use will increase labor intensity and cause chickens to rely on the bucket.

If you are worried that the chickens are too weak, it is better to use a bucket to assist in feeding them.


Regularly check whether the reduction of material in the bucket (trough) is normal, if you find that the material is not normal, it means that there are problems in some aspects, such as water line problems, temperature problems, etc. The 24-hour satiety rate should be more than 99%, which means that basically all the chickens have drunk the water and eaten the material. 

4.The problem of chicken bathing.

When individual chicks are transported for too long or when the temperature is not adjusted properly, it will cause the chickens to take a bath. After the chickens are found to take a bath, they should be immediately dispersed from under the nipples to prevent them from continuing to pile up under the nipples, and those who take a serious bath will be packed out in cardboard boxes and put at the heater to blow dry their feathers before being put into the cage.

5. Use the trough to open the food.

The baffle plate should be adjusted appropriately, generally 2cm gap can be found in the cage to run out of the chicks in time to catch them back into the cage to prevent them from dehydration outside.


6.Check environmental control and feeding accessories.

The first day to do a good job of arranging and monitoring the environmental control throughout the day. Can not be too tired to cause a lack of water and materials.
