Why do chickens die when they drink water?

In the process of poultry farming, there have been situations where chicks died as soon as they drank water, so what caused this? Today we explain in detail:
  1. If the temperature of the drinking water is too low, the gastrointestinal tract of the chicks will be stimulated after drinking, resulting in diarrhea and death.
  2. Water cut-off or lack of water occurs during the feeding process, causing the chicks to overeat due to thirst, and eventually die from diarrhea.
  3. The fluff of the chicks gets wet during the drinking process, causing colds and diarrhea.
  4. The drinking water is not replaced regularly, and the drinking fountains are not cleaned and disinfected in time, which leads to the growth of germs.

1. Drinking water temperature is too low

  • Reason: The intestines and stomach of newly hatched chickens are relatively fragile. If cold water is provided directly for drinking, it is easy to cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal diseases in the chickens, and then die.
  • Solution: Chicks generally drink for the first time about 24 hours after hatching. The drinking water should be warm boiled water, and the temperature should be controlled at about 25-30°C. After about 7 days, the chicks can basically adapt to normal temperature water, and can gradually switch to fresh, clean and cold water.

2.Water cut off, water shortage

  • Reason: During the feeding process of the chicks, there should be no water shortage or lack of water, otherwise the chicks will easily drink a lot of water due to excessive thirst, and eventually die from diarrhea and diarrhea.
  • Solution: Ensure that there is clean drinking water throughout the day, so that drinking water can be provided whenever the chicken feels thirsty. If it is found that there is no remaining drinking water in the drinking water fountain when replenishing drinking water, it means that the amount of drinking water provided before is insufficient, and the water supply should be appropriately increased or more drinking fountains should be arranged.

3. The fluff is wet

  • Reason: The newly hatched chicks have poor ability to regulate body temperature. If the fluff is accidentally wet during the drinking process, it is easy to cause colds, diarrhea, etc., and eventually lead to the death of the chicks.
  • Solution: Choose a drinking fountain of appropriate size according to the size of the chicken to prevent the chicken from falling into the water when drinking. If the chicks accidentally wet their feathers, they need to be dried in time.

4. Drinking water and drinking fountains are not cleaned up in time

  • Reason: The fresh water has not been replaced for a long time, and the drinking fountains have not been cleaned and disinfected in time, which leads to the growth of germs and infects the chickens.

  • Solution: replace the water regularly every day, and pay attention to cleaning and disinfecting the drinking fountains before adding water (drinking water should be immunized for the required number of days, and it is not suitable to disinfect the drinking fountains).
