Potential Business Opportunities in Philippines Poultry chicken Industry

The Philippines is one of the world largest producers of poultry products. With a population of nearly 105 million people, it ranks third among countries producing poultry products globally.

In recent years, the country’s poultry industry has experienced significant growth. Between 2009 and 2018, the number of chickens produced increased from 1.3 million metric tons (MT) to 1.5 million MT. This represents a rise of around 40%.

This growth is attributed to several factors including

  • increasing income levels,
  • expanding middle classes,
  • greater awareness about the health benefits of eating chicken.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), dressed chicken production grew 40% between 2009 and 2018. Dressed chicken production in 2017 reached 1.4 million MT, up from 900,000 MT in 2009.

The PSA forecasts that dressed chicken production will increase further to 2.1 million MT by 2022.

Boosted by rising incomes, a growing middle class, and robust demand in food service and retail, the Philippine broiler sector has surged and was booming over the past decade and is set to continue in the coming years.

The Philippines’ poultry production market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 5% between 2016 and 2020, according to a report released last year by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This growth will be driven primarily by increased consumption of chicken meat . The country’s per capita consumption of chicken meat was estimated at 1.3KG.

In 2017, there were about 2,500 commercial farms in the country, compared to just 500 in 2005. These are mostly located in Luzon, where most of the population lives. However, the industry is expanding outside the country’s capital city, Manila, especially in Visayas and Mindanao.

According to the National Meat Inspection Service, the biggest producer of chicken meat in the country is the Agro Industrial Corporation, followed by the Ayala Group, Nestle Foods, and San Miguel Food Products Inc., among others.

Chicken is the primary protein consumed in the country. In fact, it accounted for nearly 80% of the total protein intake in recent years. Pork, however, still remained the second-most popular protein. Beef ranked third, while fish came fourth. Chicken demand increased faster than other meats due to its affordability, lower fat.

The Philippines’ broiler industry is dominated by small-scale farmers, with just over half of the total number of farms being less than 1,000 birds. These small-scale operations account for about 20% of the total production volume, while the remaining 80% comes from large-scale farms, where each farm produces up to 10,000 birds per day. The scale of operations for broiler production ranges from about 500 birds per cycle to as high as 70,000 birds per cycle, with potential for higher operations (industry consultation). A larger population is recommended now given the advancements in housing such as the use of tunnel-ventilated houses.

Although the industry is relatively mature domestically, still faces a lot challenges such as: the high cost of production, lack of awareness about the health benefits of chicken meat, less access to credit, limited supply chain, etc. And all of these issues happen to mos of backyard poultry farm when they were trying to expand the business from free-range small-volume farm to a commercial level at large capacity.

Disadvantages of Backyard Chicken Farms

Free-range chickens are actually very expensive,  there is not much investment needed at the beginning, but with time being, the costs increase because you need more feed, water, electricity, space, labor, etc.  It can take up to 1 year to raise a free-range chicken from hatching to market weight. Free-range chickens also tend to lay smaller eggs. That's why most chicken farmers they are now exploring how to raise chickens in a more efficient way, caging system is now gradually being introduced to the poultry industry, with the aim of reducing the cost of production and improving production efficiency, there are a lot  advantage for this multi-tier battery caging system for raising broilers. Compared with traditional free-range farming, the broiler battery cage system reduces the risk of disease transmission and improves the living environment of birds. At the same time, it saves manpower and material costs.

Retech had developed a full-automatic broiler battery cage system, including automatic feeding, drinking, ventilation, manure removal, temperature control, lighting and other systems.
